Dual study programme in Social Work
We are a training partner of the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University DHBW for the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work
(Child and Youth Work)
-
Do you feel at home in educational work with children and young people?
-
Does your passion for young people know no bounds?
-
Are you also interested in the world outside Germany, are you interculturally engaged, don't feel homesick and speak English well?
-
Would you like to deepen your knowledge and gain practical experience at the same time as learning theory?
Then the dual study programme at the DHBW and practical work in Namibia is just right for you!
Who is your training partner?
We are a small Stuttgart-based foundation that has been active in southern Africa for 10 years and whose projects aim to show children and young people prospects that enable them to live where they were born - in their home country.
What can you expect from your degree programme?
Graduates of the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work carry out educational and counselling work and help to overcome social problems. They support individuals, families or specific groups of people in difficult situations. The causes can be of an interpersonal, economic, psychological, health and/or educational nature. The aim of the training programme is to enable you to successfully deal with these complex problems.
As a training partner, we offer you practice-oriented vocational training with a specialisation in ‘open child and youth work’ in the small remote village of Aussenkehr Farm, in the Namib Desert of Namibia, on the Orange River, which separates Namibia from South Africa. There you will work at the primary school in the area of school social work and life skills development as well as in the community at the local infirmary in cooperation with the social worker of the new Health Centre. We will provide you with accommodation for the duration of your training and remunerate your training period in accordance with DHBW guidelines. We also cover the transport costs and other costs incurred for travelling to and from Germany and Namibia on a quarterly basis.
What do the DHBW and the foundation require?
-
Admission requirements for studying at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) are a general higher education entrance qualification or a good entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences (entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences with an aptitude test at the DHBW).
-
We require the completion of a voluntary social year or practical experience in child and youth work.
-
Experience of working abroad is also an advantage.
-
Very good knowledge of English and intercultural skills.
How does the dual study programme work?
During the three-year programme, six theoretical phases at the DHBW Stuttgart, Germany and six practical phases in Aussenkehr/Namibia alternate every three months. Each phase lasts 12-14 weeks. The theoretical part of the programme is completed at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart. In one of the last two semesters, students are required to write a Bachelor's thesis.
The practical training takes place at Aussenkehr Farm, Namibia. You will start at Aussenkehr Primary School with around 900 children from pre-school to Grade 7. At the same time, you will familiarise yourself with other areas of work in the village and, from the second practical phase onwards, we will jointly determine the focus of your work locations and tasks.
The studies start on 1 october 2025

Insights into our work in Namibia

The Namibian television reports about our work in Außenkehr Farm
Watch the moving two-part documentary by the Namibian TV station NBC1 about our Aussenkehr Volunteer Project. We are very grateful and also a little proud to have achieved this attention in the country.
